The Hades Moon: Pluto Aspects the Moon
Is your Moon Aspected by Pluto?
It was 2020 and I had finally gone all in on studying astrology with my mentor Daphna Romanoff. I was blessed to be studying with Daphna, she just got it. The way she looked at astrology astounded me and she always knew exactly where to point in my own chart for me to have massive breakthroughs (as a good astrologer should!) One day she did a full reading for me, and noticed my natal Leo Moon square Pluto in Scorpio in my chart and asked “have you ever heard of the Hades Moon?” I hadn’t. She mentioned I should pick up the book ‘The Hades Moon’ by Judy Hall, which I jotted down somewhere in my notes apps or saved in my amazon cart for for the future, I can’t remember which. A few weeks later I am wandering through my favourite used bookstore, which just happens to have a massive metaphysical section that I can waste hours in. I looked through the astrology section wondering what gems I would find on that day, only to see a copy of ‘The Hades Moon' by Judy Hall sitting on the shelf as if it was waiting for me all this time. Shocked, I grabbed the copy and took it home.
Reading the book hit me like a ton of bricks. Maybe because Judy Hall had many astrological signatures similar to my own, I saw myself in her words. But as she wrote about the Hades Moon I saw part of my lived truth sprawled out before me on the page. This is what good astrologers do, they help you see yourself… maybe for the first time in your entire life. I saw myself stripped naked as I read her words. The power struggles, the absent father, the smothering and yet abandoning mother, the broken daughter, the symbiosis and parasitic energies we expreienced.. The Mother Wound… yes, this was mine and I claimed it in that moment. I had felt the deep ache of feeling crushed by love and yet deeply forgotten in this life while I attempted to be seen, heard, or recognized as a teenager. I saw myself in the moments I removed my own mother from my life from 19-21 years old — I even saw the deep reconciliation that happened when my mother was able to own her failures and forge a deeper love with me. As I write these words I am able to witness how far I’ve come since I stumbled on my own Hades Moon. I am sitting here seeing in technicolour the massive work my Mother and I have done to heal (and continue to heal) this wound. The Hades Moon was the spark that lit the match, and helped me begin unraveling this massive cosmic ache within me that I had been experiencing life time after life time. I know it’s not finished, but damn, we’ve done good work.
The Hades Moon, coined by Astrologer Judy Hall, is a term used in astrology to describe the placement of the Moon in the natal chart that is aspected by Pluto or in the sign of Scorpio or the 8th house. The Hades Moon is said to be a particularly intense placement that can signify deep-seated emotional issues, transformative experiences, and a tendency towards introspection and self-exploration. As I mentioned, the most notable work on the Hades Moon is by astrologer Judy Hall, and was a major part of her body of work. My desire here is to continue the conversation of this powerful placement. This is one of the core mother wounds as the karmic cleanser Pluto forms a deep conversation with the energy of nurturance, safety, subconscious tendencies and so much more in your chart.
The Hades Moon in Astrology:
In astrology, the Moon is associated with our emotions, inner self, nourishment, the body, mothering, and our unconscious. Pluto, on the other hand, is associated with transformation, power, death, rebirth, and the unconscious depths of the psyche. When these two energies are combined, it creates a potent combination that can lead to profound inner transformation and healing — but not before meeting the ultimate struggle. The person who carries the Hades Moon placement in the birth chart is often a person who has a powerful emotional depth and intensity. This placement can bring up issues related to control, power, and manipulation, as well as deep-seated fears and desires almost always linked into some form of the relationship to the mother. Hades Moon souls experience some of the most intense depths as their emotions run deep under the surface, right into the underworld. The subconscious lives in the realms of Hades and with this they are consistently drawing up information from below to the surface.
This mother wound desires to release control, cut chords, ease fears and conquer past life traumas of deep links with the mother or mothering archetypes, your own relationship to mothering and nurturing, safety, attachment and being cared for in past lives. This could relate to the “smother” wound or devouring mother like that of Demeter and Persephone, as well as the absent mother or the abandoning mother. Like all things I speak about, everything exists on a spectrum.
This is a true placement of shadow worker and healers called in this life to alchemize the karmic ache of suffering through the ancestral maternal line.
This deeply karmic placement carried the wound of the matriarchy though you do not have to be female to have this placement, it has nothing to do with gender at all, it usually carried through the matriarchal line. Fear carried through the womb generation after generation. The womb space passes on trauma, we know this from studies showing children experience the emotions of the mother within the womb and through energetics we see Root Chakra issues come to light as a child develops. (I speak more to this inside of the Decoding Your Ancestral Karma Guide and inside of It’s Karmic 2: Decoding your Ancestral Karma)
The Hades Moon child incarnates into this world feeling unsafe. The womb is an unsafe place to be and most hades moon children and mothers have traumatic births, traumatic pregnancies, and other intense experiences. Often when there is no current life connection, past life regressions expose the karmic experiences from previous/other lives. Like a gripping or fighting not to incarnate again, not to feel pain again, not to experience this earth school again. The hades moon child clings to their mother if they can, but often is somehow cast out. At some point the chord must be cut for better or for worse, through choice, through loss, or through abandonment.
I believe we hold sacred contracts with our the people in our lives in order to learn major soul lessons through out our lives. The experience of the trauma bond with the mother, the grandmother, and the child — whether good or bad, deep or lost — is a sacred lesson you asked for if you have this placement (don’t worry, you’re not doomed. I incarnated with this signature too.)
One of the karmic implications of healing through the Hades Moon is the need to confront and release past traumas. This placement can signify a past life in which the individual experienced intense emotional pain or trauma, which they are now carrying into this lifetime. By working through these past issues, you can begin to release negative karma and move towards a more positive future. Remember, everything is a choice and you are co-creating with the universe.
And this achy, yet beautiful, place of learning pain from a very young age helps your soul begin to work through whatever karmic pattern you chose to break in this life. Most souls who incarnate with this energy and are willing to see its truth are generational curse breakers doing the work of changing their karmic and ancestral patterns. If you’re reading this, I can almost bet that’s you.
Often past incarnations of losing children, or passing during childbirth as well as being the child who chooses not to incarnate during childbirth are part of this signature and are cellularly remembered. (Definitely read Judy Halls book if you wish to explore this through her case studies.)
Where to Look in Your Chart:
What to look for: A conjunction, square, opposition, trine or sextile from Pluto to your moon in your chart.
The conjunction will be the most intense, followed by the square and opposition.
But the trine and sextile will still feel the Hades Moon wound, but may feel more ready to integrate and heal in this life.

There is a relearning of finding safety in reincarnation through soul work, energy healing, and somatic healing.
This powerful placement is found through almost 90 percent of my clients and it will help you understand the deepest most psychological aspects of your sacred magic.
Look to see if you have any aspects between Pluto and your Moon in your chart. (Note if you have a Scorpio moon you also have the hades moon, if it aspects Pluto its double dose. If your moon is in the 8th house, same thing. I also like to explore these themes when Pluto is conjunct the Imum Coeli. )
The most intense versions of this moon will include the Moon conjunct Pluto, Square Pluto, or Opposing Pluto but don’t rule out Sextiles, Quincunxes, or Trines. The Sextile or Trine Pluto may be more ready to work through the past wounding in this incarnation but if you have these placements there is still deep work to do.
Healing the Hades Moon:
Healing through the Hades Moon can also involve a deep exploration of the unconscious mind. This can involve techniques such as dream work, meditation, shadow work, past life regressions and therapy to uncover and release hidden emotional patterns and beliefs. Through this process of self-discovery, you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself and your place in the world, leading to greater personal growth and fulfillment.
To begin the healing process, it is important to first understand the nature of the Hades Moon and how it manifests in your life personally. Take time to explore your birth chart and identify the specific aspects and placements that contribute to this energy. (We do exactly this inside of It’s Karmic 1: Past Life Astrology Method and It’s Karmic 2: Decoding Ancestral Astrology)
Next, it is important to confront the traumas and emotional wounds that may be holding you back, with support. I always suggest having a guide to support you when moving into the underworld, whether that’s a psychotherapist, past life regressionist, or someone qualified to hold space for you. This can be a difficult and painful process, but it is essential for healing. I also highly suggest body work for moving through some of these deeper wounds. As you may have heard, we hold our issues in our tissues.
Another powerful tool for healing through the Hades Moon is meditation and self-reflection. When you first start unpacking this part of your chart, take time each day to sit in quiet contemplation and explore your inner world. Journaling can also be a helpful way to process your emotions and gain clarity on your thoughts and feelings.
Finally, it is important to cultivate a sense of self-compassion and forgiveness. Remember that healing is a process, and it is okay to take things one step at a time. Be kind and patient with yourself, and allow yourself to feel and express your emotions without judgment.
The Hades Moon in astrology can signify a powerful potential for emotional transformation and healing, but like all things in life, you need to be an active participant in the process.
By confronting past traumas and delving deep into the unconscious mind, individuals with this placement can achieve profound personal growth and a greater sense of purpose in life. While this can be a challenging process, the rewards of healing through the Hades Moon can be immense, leading to a more fulfilling and joyful life.
